FASHION WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR |

-By Janet Kalter

The boutique, Franklin Square, is located at 128 N. Third Street. I don't usually attempt predictions about peoples' reactions to situations or other people, but I feel pretty comfortable about predicting that you will like Liz Burt, the owner of this business.

The title of this article is based on her answer to my question, "How would you describe your business in just a few words?"

Her answer: "Fashion should have a sense of humor. It should be something to wear when you're in a great mood --- or to put you in a great mood." She thinks that can happen when the clothing is "fun, quirky, cool".

The interior of the store is an interesting mix of a crisp, light-colored walls with, what I think would be described as folk art pieces mounted on the walls, holding interesting items and jewelry. Most of the items are for sale, but for the time-being, Liz is using some of her personal favorite things as props. She describes herself as a "picky hoarder".

She has a business named, "Franklin Square Design" as well as her new boutique. Almost all of the jewelry in her boutique is of her own design. Her interest in producing jewelry dates back to her studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. She has worked in the fashion business for a while, and worked for a jewelry company for a year. She decided she could do the jewelry herself, and began to do just that with Franklin Square Design. Ultimately, she has decided to combine her two loves, fashion and jewelry, and has opened her boutique.

A good friend, Maggie Copeland, works along with her. She is not exactly a partner in the business. We decided that "cohort" might be the best word to describe her, as in "supporter" or "collaborator". She has been, and continues to be, very helpful to Liz.

The clothing on sale is both new and vintage, for both women and men. She has been a little surprised by the level of interest by men in the clothing, and intends to increase that part of her offering. I was interested in hearing and seeing how the vintage clothing is transformed, by alterations, to appear more contemporary.

Liz loves the vibe in Old City. It's her favorite part of town. She marvels, as we all do, about how friendly people are in our neighborhood.

When you enter the boutique, you will be greeted by either Liz or her manager, Amanda Wright. I was pleased to see that there were many people dropping in while I was there.

Please welcome Liz to our neighborhood and check out the fashion on display!
